New Age Hacks for the Autumn Witch (1).p

Claire Farquhar – astrology columnist

Autumn is one of the most spectacular times of year.

Our trees move from luscious green to stunning gold, and their leaves crunch beneath our feet when we walk outside. Summer days turn cooler and grow crisp.

As the sun moves through Pisces, Aries and then Taurus, before reaching the wintery zodiacs, we’re all influenced by its energy transitions regardless of when we were born. Sure, we mightn’t feel the effects as strongly as someone who has a true zodiac under that sun, but we can still work with the energies around us.

This article will recommend essential oils, crystals and DIY self-care recipes, aimed at tapping into the energies of Pisces (roughly from February 19th to March 20th), Aries (March 21st to April 20th) and Taurus (April 21st to May 20th), to help you thrive this autumn .

Essential Oils: Peppermint, Orange & Ylang Ylang

Peppermint is the perfect contrast to the hot-headed, impulsive Aries energy. It’s cooling and instils focus, so it’s the perfect essential oil to use if you want to get shit done this autumn.

To use:

• Diffuse alone or with some lemon or lavender for a pleasant scent

• Rub on the balls of your feet for absorption into your body*

• Breathe in from the bottle for a quick energy boost

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and thus represents youth. Citrus oils like orange, lemon and grapefruit help to bring out that sense of child-like wonder and joy that we’ve all subconsciously repressed due to the whole never-being-able-to-afford-a-house-thingTM.

Orange is also a good antidepressant and can help reduce that fear of the unknown, making it a good oil to look at this autumn – particularly if a change in work, school or family life is heading towards you.

To enjoy the effects of orange:

  • Diffuse alone or with other citrus oils. Orange also blends beautifully with geranium, neroli and clary sage

  • Put a few drops in your bath for an uplifting soak to reduce any stress

  • Put a drop in your water bottle for a refreshing boost*

* Not all oil brands are safe for topical application or consumption – read the labels first!

Ylang Ylang

Taurean energy is very much concerned with material pleasures. Ylang Ylang can help to manifest these excitements and also savour them. It’s also an aphrodisiac and is one of the best essential oils when it comes to counteracting the effects of depression and reducing tension, making it a good choice for a massage oil.

To use Ylang Ylang this autumn:

  • Diffuse it with patchouli, vetiver, lemon, or anything floral

  • Add a drop to your shampoo or conditioner

  • Add a few drops to your bath for a soothing feeling and to prepare for a deep sleep

Peppermint, Tea Tree and Lavender Room Spray

Add two drops of peppermint, tea tree and lavender essential oils to a spray bottle and mix with water. The oil and water won’t mix properly, so it’s important to shake before each spray!

Focus Potion

Add six drops of peppermint oil and six drops of orange oil to a roller bottle, and fill with a carrier oil. Apply it on your wrists, palms or behind your neck. This is a great one to carry around to school or work. As well as aiding focus, this blend is really uplifting.

Ylang Ylang Bath Oil

Pour half a cup of any carrier oil (grapeseed or fractionated coconut oil will work well) into a glass jar. Add ten drops of ylang ylang oil and ten drops of orange oil and stir well. Pour a few teaspoons into a hot bath. Add some Epsom salts for an extra luxe soak.

Ylang Ylang Gentle Face Serum

You’ll need to mix three ounces of argan oil with three drops of ylang ylang oil, five drops of lavender oil, five drops of roman chamomile oil and one drop of rose oil. Mix well and apply each night.

Crystals: Carnelian, Emerald, Sugilite

Carnelian is a crystal which simultaneously brings out the best Aries qualities (confidence and creativity) whilst protecting one from more disruptive ones. Carnelian has a peaceful energy that counteracts Aries’ youthful, and sometimes too intense, emotions.

Emerald is a crystal often recommended for Taureans, so it’s a great one for us all to work with as Taurus season draws near in autumn. Taurus energy tends to be hot and intense, so emerald can be used or worn for calming.

To work with Pisces energy, sugilite is a good companion. Pisces is the last sign in the zodiac cycle and thus it symbolises quiet wisdom and connectivity to the higher dimension. Pisceans are the ultimate empaths of the zodiac, and sugilite helps to protect them from taking on unwanted energies. Sleep with sugilite beside your bed to ward off negative dreams or hold it while doing a sleep meditation this autumn.

  • Pisces: Pisceans are soft and sensitive, so use colours like lavender, cream and other soft tones this Pisces season. Avoid loud and bright shades.

  • Aries: to sync with Aries’ affectionate, youthful and fiery energy, pull out some red hues whenever circumstance allows. To negate the level of Aries energy in your life, tone it down with some neutral greys and taupes.

  • Taurus: Tinkerbell-esque forest colours do wonders to work with the earthy, bubbly Taurean energy – think deep green, soft pink and a little glitz. To keep that hot-headed infamous Taurean temper at bay, avoid wearing red.
