Blue Mountains: Leisure Inn Spires Review

On our drive to Leura from Sydney for a one-night getaway after an insanely busy week, my friend and I grew an even larger appetite for relaxation and light exploring. As we approached our accommodation – Leisure Inn Spires – we were content with the fact it was in the heart of town, close to the calm strip of shops, pubs and restaurants with the picturesque backdrop of a crisp mountain skyline.

We were beyond surprised with our spacious one-bedroom apartment. Considering it was a one night stay at its affordable price, we were expecting not exactly an average room, but mostly something just convenient. Although convenience was definitely an element to the attractiveness of the room (think: wifi, TV, kitchen), the room also oozed style.

Following the location’s theme of nature and natural beauty, the room consisted of a calm colour palette featuring eggshell and caramel custard tones with earthy green touches. Our bedroom was sizable with a window overlooking greenery and other apartments, making it feel more open and welcoming. Not to mention, we had one of the best sleeps of our lives in that comfortable queen bed. Perhaps it was a fusion of the tranquil outdoor sounds throughout the night, but without a doubt that the mattress offered an above par night’s sleep with its wholesome hug.

Walking through the lounge room onto the private balcony, you overlook a lush lawn and a layer of friendly neighbours waving to you from their apartments across. Here, we spent a lot of time playing our favourite tunes paired with meaningful chats over a gin and tonic, cheese plate and glasses of Sav Blanc. It was just perfect. We were lucky to find ourselves on a gorgeous day too; the sun beaming down onto us where we could catch up on our tans.

Adding to this, I loved that the balcony offered panoramic views while also maintaining a sense of privacy from next door. What I mean by this is we didn’t have a block of cement concealing the sides of the balcony (a true pet peeve of mine, as it can feel rather enclosed when balconies are shut off like that). On the other hand, you didn’t feel too exposed either or like you were in your neighbour’s space like housemates as each balcony was spread apart from one another.

The modern kitchen is fully furnished, meaning for those who desire a quiet night or are there for a longer stay and decide to cook some meals, can definitely do so and without limitations. We didn’t exactly cook anything extravagant (we baked garlic bread for a midnight snack), however we loved how the option was there. The bathroom (containing usual facilities plus a spa bath and large mirror) also surpassed expectations and it was the perfect space for getting ready before heading out to the town.

Whenever we left the apartment, we explored the cafes (we absolutely loved Red Door for a nourishing breakfast) and the string of shops selling jewellery, books and antiques. My friend bought herself a gorgeous ring from Teddy Sinclair, and I bought the latest Liane Moriarty novel from Megalong Books. After successful purchases that warmed our souls, we stopped by for a few drinks at the Alexandra Hotel – a quaint country pub sporting a fireplace, great service and a gorgeous beer garden overlooking the train tracks.

For dinner, we absolutely recommend The Bunker, which sits elegantly right across from the Leisure Inn Spires apartments – completely convenient, allowing for a relaxed dining experience where you don’t need to worry about driving home or parking meters. The country-meets-suburbia style venue with homey interiors and outdoor dining on the deck provides wholesome food and picturesque views of the mountains. From the menu, a highlight was the pork bao buns, and for cocktails we definitely recommend the pornstar martini. More than anything, we loved the community vibe and warm hospitality. That view also definitely takes the cake.

Other interesting activities and places to see within Leura that’s walking distance are the Toy & Railway Museum and the Everglades House & Gardens. The apartments are also just a short drive to all the famous attractions of the World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains including the Three Sisters, Scenic Railway as well as unbeatable bush walking opportunities.

We absolutely loved our relaxing midweek getaway at Leisure Inn Spires. If you’re looking for a comfortable stay in the heart of Leura that offers above and beyond the price point, look no further.
