It's no secret that hemp has been slowly creeping its way onto our plates since it's legalisation back in 2017. Now, hemp is making its mark in skincare.

Aussie natural beauty brand, Hey Bud born in Melbourne launched in 2019. Known for their hemp clay mask, moisturiser and face oil (all tested by the team at bubble.!), their mission is to naturally balance, nourish and hydrate the skin, leaving it supple and smooth – especially as we head into the cooler months!

We heard about the story behind the brand, the benefits of hemp-based skincare and their tips for keeping our skin hydrated in autumn:

Q: What's the story behind your brand Hey Bud?

The idea came about when one of the founder's parents, a beauty therapist, ordered Hemp seed oil skincare from the US back in 2017. She found that hemp seed oil perfectly moisturised her face and also noticed a drastic decrease in redness around her sensitive areas. At this point in time, it was very difficult to source any Australian-based hemp products given it was only recently legalised in 2017.

Understanding the benefits of hemp, the boys set out with the idea to bring high-quality hemp skin care to Australia. The trio soon partnered up with one of Australia’s most experienced chemists to source their first sample. From here, the brand exploded and with many customers loving the natural, vegan Hemp Clay Mask.

Q: What are the benefits of hemp-based skincare products?

Known as nature’s perfectly balanced oil, Hemp Seed Oil is packed with many essential nutrients that our skin craves. A strengthener, hydrator, healer and rejuvenator, Hemp Seed Oil isn’t just another trendy skincare formulation. It’s a game changer for so many skin types and conditions.

When it comes to long-lasting hydration, Hemp Seed Oil takes the cake. A humectant, which is science-speak for that it pulls moisture towards the skin, Hemp Seed Oil works hard to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day.

Packed with an impressive level of Omega 3, 6 and 9, Hemp Seed Oil serves as the building blocks to achieving stronger and smoother skin. Strengthening your skin’s barrier to help it retain its moisture, Hemp Seed Oil says #thankyounext to dryness and dehydration and hello to luscious looking skin.

Q: What skin type is hemp-based skincare products best for?

Hemp seed oil is primarily recognised for its natural moisturising properties, however, it also contains a very powerful omega-6 fatty acid, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which acts as an anti-inflammatory while simultaneously promoting skin cell generation. It's because of this and the non-comedogenic nature of Hemp Seed Oil which makes it an all-rounder for all skin types and concerns, including oily and dry.

Q: What are your tips for skincare in autumn?

Don’t ditch the SPF. We know how important SPF is when the sun is out – it protects your skin from UV rays and signs of premature ageing. A common misconception is that SPF is only needed during the summer months, however, it’s good to include SPF in your skincare routine all year-round. UV rays can damage your skin, regardless of the weather or the season.

Hydration is key. Dry, flaky skin can be synonymous with autumn and winter, and staying hydrated is the secret to combating it. In addition to drinking more water, give your skin a little help by upping your moisturiser game and adding a facial oil.

Hey Bud’s Hemp Face Oil contains Jojoba Oil amongst other nutritious ingredients which is rich in vitamin E and is a great nourishing oil that absorbs quickly into the skin and protects against moisture-loss.

Our thoughts at bubble.:

Our editor, Claudia, trialled a few of the brand’s hemp-based skin care, and this is what she has to say:

“Lubricating my skin with the moisturiser every morning and night has left me with utterly rejuvenated and supple skin. As the weeks went by, my skin began to feel as if I had a daily hydrafacial, which is pretty impressive! There were no breakouts or sudden reactions to the products – and I have quite sensitive skin, so that really means something to me – and I felt I received instant results: happy, hydrated skin.

“The green clay mask was not only fun to put on (I looked like a fabulous version of Shrek sans ogre ears, hah!), it worked like magic in preventing blackheads and acne, as well as giving my face a refresh after days working in the city where my pores would very easily clog up. As I’m unfortunately quite acne-prone (I indeed have adult acne), using the face mask made my skin go from red and bumpy to smoother with smaller and flatter spots that could achieve a more air-brushed look when I’d apply make-up rather than look like a human rocky-road (which is always the worst, especially during periods!).

“It’s safe to say I’ve permanently added these to my daily skin care routine!”
